Cupping Aftercare: What to do after cupping and what to avoid
Cupping is a safe, pleasant, and effective therapy for a variety of health problems. Cupping provides a mild suction that loosens and lifts connective tissues, increasing blood and lymph flow to the skin and muscles. To get the most out of cupping, proper cupping aftercare is essential. It’s critical that you adhere to these rules.
What to do after cupping or a cupping massage:
1. Make sure you’re getting enough of water.
Cupping helps release cellular waste from your tissues, and water helps drain it out of your lymphatic system.
2. Keep warm.
Cover the area(s) where you underwent cupping as much as possible.
3. Rest.
After cupping, you may feel more sleepy than usual or suffer flu-like symptoms (headache or general body aches). This is your immune system’s brief response to the cellular waste that cupping helps discharge.

What to avoid after cupping or a cupping massage:
For 4-6 hours post cupping, avoid exposure to:
1. Caffeine, alcohol, sugary meals and beverages, dairy and processed meats.
The capacity of your body to process the therapy is slowed by certain meals.
2. Showers that are too hot, saunas, hot tubs, and air conditioning.
Your skin in the places where the cups were inserted will be more sensitive to warmth after cupping. Allow time for your skin to heal. If possible, shower with filtered water to avoid reintroducing unnecessary chemicals onto your skin.
3. Intense exercise
4. Cold and windy conditions.
How to prepare for cupping or cupping massage:
Hydrate. Water is essential for your health, especially for your lymphatic system. Cupping supports your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system clears away cellular waste from your body and it needs plenty of water to do this effectively
- Eat an hour or so before your appointment.
- Don’t shave the area within four hours of your appointment. Your therapist really doesn’t mind stubble and your skin will thank you.
- Recover from sunburn. When you receive cupping, it will feel like that area is warmer than normal. Neither the cup nor the extra heat will feel good on sunburned skin. Apply some soothing aloe and wait until your skin has recovered before your next cupping appointment.
- Don’t exfoliate aggressively. Exfoliating removes a layer of dead skin, which makes your skin extra sensitive. Wait a couple days after aggressive exfoliation treatment before receiving cupping.
How to make the cupping marks go away faster:
Your skin will have round markings that range in hue from pink to deep crimson or purple after cupping. People may make fun of you because you resemble an octopus. Wear those badges with pride! You’re doing wonderful things for your body.
Cupping discolorations will vanish. Some may fade after a few hours, while others may take up to two weeks to totally go. The discolorations are caused by the state of your body at the time of cupping.
If you want those markings to fade quickly, you should hydrate and rest.
Even when following these cupping aftercare rules, everyone’s body reacts differently to cupping. If you have any questions before or after your cupping session, please contact us to talk with a qualified therapist.
